Sad News - Bob Gray

With much sadness I have to report that my husband Bob Gray passed away at home on Wednesday 24th March after a long battle with Parkinsons.

Bob was well known at the club especially on the squash front. He played for many Dorking teams, captaining some and also played and captained Surrey squash teams achieving national success. He was also president of Surrey Squash and Chairman of DLTSC.  Apart from his squash he was multi talented, being a top class amateur golfer and county champion and he also was a linguist being fluent in many European languages which he used in his work as an interim financial troubleshooter on the continent. In retirement he was involved in charity work including being on the board of The Children's Trust

Returning to his squash career he was well known for his stamina and running ability on court and in fact was nicknamed Duracell by his team mates because he never stopped chasing the ball. In one match I remember one occasion when he was in his 60s playing a youngster who after a typically poor knock-up (for Bob) had a word with him and said that he was supposed to be playing the Dorking no1 in the team. Bob confirmed he was the no1 with a wry smile and then proceeded to thrash the youngster losing very few points to the delight of everyone watching. His opponent took the defeat very well and congratulated him afterwards! Bob was always the perfect gentleman and always tried to set an example to other squash players and was much  respected in the squash world.

He will be sorely missed.
