Sad News...
Dear Members,
We are sorry to give the sad news of the passing of one of the club's most long standing members, Fred Hoad. Condolences to his wife, Sue, and all the family.
Details of the funeral will be circulated when known.
Please see below some words about Fred from a very good friend of his and an ex member of the club of many years himself - Simon Goddard:
Fred Hoad 1939 - 2024
Its with great sadness we learn of the passing of Club stalwart Fred Hoad at the age of 84. Fred joined the Tennis Club in 1959 and from the very early days became an influential member of the club. An accountant by profession Fred served as a young man as treasurer of the club. After retirement he became bar secretary and fulfilled this role with his usual enthusiasm (especially for real ale!).
When Fred joined the club, it was the era of grass and shale courts and a pavilion lit by gaslights. I particularly remember Fred for his passion in encouraging junior players and supporting participation for all in the sport. In the 1960’s he spotted two young lads on The Goodwyns Estate messing around with racket and ball. He encouraged them to join the club which they did with great success (look for the names Andy Watt and Neil Brister on the honours board). My Mum still remembers when Fred turned up at our front door to ask for permission for me to join the club team aged 14. Fred established a club junior team of Andy, Neil and I, and despite having four children of his own he spent hours ferrying us around the county in his Morris Minor estate. We only failed to win the county junior championship on games count back.
Fred himself was an accomplished player and achieved success in the men’s doubles with his great friend Geoff South, and also with Neil. He was also an enthusiastic squash player.
Fred’s enthusiasm for the sport remained constant throughout his long membership. Until recently he was still supporting the players on Fred’s Sunday morning tennis, through which he continued to encourage juniors. Although his direct approach did on occasion ruffle a few feathers, underneath was a genuine desire to do the best for the club he loved.
The Board awarded Fred life membership a few years ago in recognition of all his work for the club over many years.
Perhaps not known by many Fred was also passionate about Dorkinians football club where he became Club President and was still supporting the teams this year.
To sum up, in the words of ex Club Chairman Peter Johnson “Thank you, every club needs a Fred”.
