Chairman's Summer Newsletter

Dear Members,

We are in the middle of the summer, the school holidays are starting, and even the sun has finally decided it does not want to miss out on the fun. After a busy couple of months we are now entering a quieter time for the Club. But as always there is still plenty going on. Summer Camps are starting for the kids, teams are competing in Surrey leagues, the Dorking & Leatherhead league, and the Chaucer League, and we have a new bicycle shed going in. Hopefully this will encourage more people to come to the Club on bicycle, thereby improving fitness, helping the environment and reducing the load on our car park.

Our first major event of the year was the Grace / Jackson-Stops tournament finals day, which was very well supported by our members and our sponsors Jackson-Stops handing out the prizes. We celebrated our award of LTA Surrey Club of the Year and our tennis Chairman Will award of LTA Surrey and Southern Region Volunteer of the Year, and managed to take some great photographs of our members enjoying the event. The renewals of our memberships on 1 March using our new system went near perfectly with Janet, Gill and Paul managing the process behind the scenes – thank you! Our annual club Squash Trophy competitions were concluded with a very well attended Finals Night on 20th April. All our squash courts have now been refurbished, with court 3 receiving a brand new floor. The AGM went well, and I want to thank you for your continued support of our Board.

I am pleased to be able to let you know that we have now found an excellent candidate for Treasurer, David Whiteman. We are planning a short general meeting later in August to request the membership to confirm him as our new Treasurer. Thank you to Paul for continuing to support us whilst we were looking for a new Treasurer. In late June we had our annual Tennis finals with 10+ hours of back to back finals matches played on 6 courts – 30 matches were played in total. For the first time this included juniors finals, thanks to the great efforts from our junior chair Catherine. What a great day it was, with excellent catering, a great atmosphere, and helped by fantastic weather.

I would like to finish this newsletter by thanking all the volunteers who made all the events possible, in particular our Social Coordinator Caroline and our volunteer of the Year James who with 40+ volunteers and helpers made our Open day such a great success. We gained 35 new members to whom I would like to extend a very warm welcome.

I wish you all a great summer.
