Brian's Tennis Newsletter - 21st March

Brian Love

Hi Everyone

Well the sun is finally shining and the clay is drying, making the pleasure of sliding into your shots much easier and fun!

Draper wins 1st ATP Masters event in Indian Wells... 7th in the world now!
Raducanu wins 1st round in Miami. Navarro up next.
Boulter out...
Kyrgios wins 1st round with his usual crazy shots and antics on court.. Will his wrist hold up to continue competing.

Club News

Congratulations or commiserations to all our teams competing recently in matches. Keep flying that Dorking flag!

Welcome to our new members or players returning from injury or illness. Great to see you down the club.

Don't forget our social sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays... Great chance to meet new players and have a bit of fun on court.

Check out the new tables and chairs... Very comfortable! Make sure you wipe those fingerprints off the glass!

Remember to put your old tennis balls in the green recycling bin. The club sends them off and receives some money in return!

Our juniors are great, but sometimes they need a little nudge in the correct etiquette direction to help them learn... Don't be shy to tell them how good they are or how well they played or behaved. We all need a bit of encouragement now and again. We can always pass on any feedback to our juniors and parents.

Club tournament entry details out very soon... And some of you may have noticed my date error in the last newsletter. CLUB FINALS IS SATURDAY 28TH JUNE 2025.

Jackson-Stops GRACE finals next weekend so get down and support the players and the brilliant charity GRACE.

Good luck to Claire & Steve this Saturday...

Coaching Tip of the Week

When your partner is serving, follow the direction of the serve to create best option to intercept or not to be beaten. ie:
If they serve wide then shift closer to tram line to cover the passing shot.
If they serve down the middle , there is less chance for the down the line so you can poach nearer the middle.
You should be moving all the time depending on where the ball goes on the other side of the net. So to be clear... Very rare are you static!

Your Tennis Journey??

Have you ever thought back to where you started and where you are now in your tennis journey....

  • How far have you come?
  • Your strengths?
  • Your best points?
  • Your biggest miss! I remember framing a smash on court 9 and the ball hit the roof of one the houses backing onto the club! Needless to say my racket nearly followed it!
  • Your favourite partners?
  • Your most fun on court?
  • Your best results?

Pat yourself on the back for your journey... The ups and downs... Just keep trying to improve and keep enjoying. The journey doesn't last forever!

Keep enjoying the sun and get on the courts as much as you can... Remember if all else fails you can take up pickleball!

Have a good week!

Brian
